i92: Public ownership of buses

7 Yes, first choice

Take bus routes back into public ownership.

Reasons Hull needs to reduce fossil fuelled vehicle movements to zero over the next 9 years. Transport requirements will need to be met through active travel, electrified mass transit, and some private electric vehicles. As there is not enough time to build a tram or light railway network, electric buses will be essential. Electric buses are well developed technology and already the norm in many cities. Private bus operators aim to maximise profit rather than public utility.  Bus routes need to be taken over by the Council so charging infrastructure can be installed and buses operated to facilitate a coherent carbon neutral transition plan. As many bus routes currently produce a profit, this can be done with no net cost.many
